Green issues 'will grow in importance for commercial mortgage holders'

Green issues 'will grow in importance for commercial mortgage holders'
Date: 12/11/2009

Commercial mortgage holders could increasingly consider sustainability in their sector as it recovers from the economic slump in the months to come.

According to Clive Bull, partner of real estate advisor Cushman & Wakefield, the commercial property people have had concerns other than the environment in the past year and a half, but will focus more on green issues as it comes out of the downturn.

Mr Bull said: "When you look at the institutions that do buy commercial properties, they will look at the green credentials of buildings, so I do think it is becoming more and more important, but there has been a lot more on people's minds in the last 18 months."

The Daily Telegraph recently reported that a forthcoming Carbon Trust report, authored by Stuart Farmer and set for release later in the month, claims that commercial property accounts for 18 per cent of all UK emissions.

It also indicates that these levels have stayed the same for the last two decades.
