Maintenance of commercial property is not currently the primary concern for those with commercial mortgages, it would seem.
According to NB Real Estate's analysis of Office for National Statistics data, commercial property expenditure on repair and maintenance has dropped by 22 per cent since the fourth quarter of 2007.
Whereas repair and maintenance spend totalled £4.12 billion two years ago, it added up to £3.2 billion in the second quarter of 2009, the research shows.
Commenting on the commercial property study, managing director of Aspect Maintenance William Davies said: "There has been a trend away from planned maintenance, as businesses rely on resolving maintenance issues on a reactive basis."
It is expected that expenditure will increase sharply over the next two years "as companies pay the price for cutting planned maintenance spend", he added, before suggesting that businesses are generally less inclined to put money towards their properties at present.
